Last month, as well as learning all about different types of transport and playing on our new climbing frame, we were also busy getting our float ready for the Cherry Fayre!
This year we decided on a space theme for our float, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. We watched a video of Apollo 11 taking off and landing on the moon. We made our own rockets and looked at how they take off . Then we counted down from five and pretended to blast off into space.
We all got to work creating costumes for our carnival float so we could dress up as mini astronauts, rocket men and women, aliens and ground control. We decorated the tractor and trailer with a huge space rocket and lots of paper lantern planets.
On the day of the Cherry Fayre the sun shone for the carnival procession. We really enjoyed getting dressed up and riding on the tractor, following Samba Kernow as they led the carnival procession on its route. Waving to all the onlookers was good fun! We'd like to say a special thank you to James Kendall for his skilful tractor driving and Peter Verrin for the trailer.
We were so happy to discover that our float had won first place in the float category and also that we had won the cup for the best overall entry!
Then, to top it all off, some of our grown-ups took part in the tug of war competition and won and we also won second prize for our astronaut scarecrow. What a successful and spectacularly fun day it was for everyone at Menheniot Playgroup!
After the Cherry Fayre we turned playgroup into mission control, role playing, dancing to sci-fi music and reading stories about space, rockets and the moon. We are enjoying the last few weeks of our Summer term as we come to the end of another fun year at Menheniot Playgroup. Some of our bigger boys and girls are getting ready to leave us as they are going to start school in September, they have even had a few practice days at the school. We are looking forward to giving them a great send off at our graduation and fun day in July.
We are also looking forward to an end of term trip to Looe on the train at the beginning of July and hoping for good weather then as well, so we can have some fun on the beach together.
Our Tuesday afternoon babies and toddlers have been busy getting their entries ready to display at the upcoming Liskeard and Menheniot Shows. Our fun and friendly stay-and-play group runs every Tuesday afternoon in The Old School during term time from 1:30 to 3pm and costs £2 per family. We all love seeing our friends each week and meeting new faces too.
